London-born Denys Baptiste made a big impact when he joined us in 2022 with his breath-taking virtuosity, his instant rapport with the house band and ability to communicate with the audience. Mentored by Jean Toussaint he blossomed under Gary Crosby’s Nu Troop into a resourceful improvisor and an imaginative composer. Perhaps his crowning achievement was his suite inspired by Martin Luther King, “Let Freedom Ring!” Today Denys is an inspiration to younger players and has been lauded as an “…icon of British jazz” Time Magazine
